Biography

Proffessor Martin Stocker, MD, PhD, is a neonatologist with a strong focus on neonatal sepsis, antimicrobial stewardship, and optimization of early-life infection management. He is a co-founder of the international Neonatal Sepsis Trial Network, which aims to reduce unnecessary antibiotic exposure in newborns through evidence-based approaches.

His research has been instrumental in advancing procalcitonin-guided decision-making to safely shorten antibiotic therapy in suspected early-onset neonatal sepsis. He played a key role in the development and execution of the multicentre NeoPInS trial, published in The Lancet, and has contributed to subsequent studies demonstrating the clinical and economic impact of this approach. His work also includes large-scale epidemiological studies on paediatric sepsis, including a national analysis of blood culture–proven sepsis cases in Switzerland.

In addition, he has been actively involved in national and international initiatives to improve sepsis care, including co-founding the Swiss National Sepsis Action Plan. His current interests focus on collaborative research, implementation of stewardship strategies, and improving outcomes for neonates with suspected or confirmed sepsis.
